Rutherford County Facts
Rutherford County is located on the border of the Piedmont and Mountain regions of North Carolina. It was formed in 1779 and named after Griffith Rutherford, a Revolutionary War general who was a member of the NC provincial congress.
Rutherford County was home to Cherokee Indians and later was settled by Scotch-Irish, German, French, English and Swiss settlers. The Bechtler Mint which was established in 1831 minted more than $2 million in gold coins until late 1840s.
Rutherford Regional Health System is located in Rutherfordton while two other hospitals are just a few minutes away in Hendersonville, NC which are Park Ridge and Pardee.
Lake Lure is the largest body of water in the county and the surrounding area is a town named after it. You can enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, picnics and large get-togethers on the lake.

Rutherford County has seven incorporated cities that include Forest City, Rutherfordton, Lake Lure, Ellenboro, Spindale, Ruth, and Bostic. Rutherfordton is the county seat and Forest City is the largest town.
Forest City
Forest City brings southern charm and historic preservation together with modern innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. With a population of 7,300 and is the largest city in Rutherford County.
